Starting Child Obesity Treatment

Before jumping the gun and putting your child in a child obesity treatment program, you should consider a few necessary items.

First and foremost, if your child is an adolescent, you need to be sure that they have stopped growing. It is common for teens and preteens to accumulate some additional weight before they hit a growth spurt.

After these growth spurts occur, these preteens or teen will be at an appropriate weight according to the body mass index. On the other hand, if you notice that your child is overweight, it is likely that he or she is.

In this case, it would be to the child’s benefit to begin a program to help decrease body fat and improve general health through simply, practical applications. Parents, however, need to be careful not to obsess about weight.

It is one thing to be concerned about general health, nutrition, and fitness, and it is another to understand when your child is in fact overweight.

Any child obesity treatment program will relate the importance of creating healthy eating habits early in life. If your medical care giver and you believe your child is putting on more weight than needed, it may be a good idea to evaluate your family’s eating and activity habits.

To begin any kind of weight management program, your medical care giver will need to do an assessment to determine if your child’s weight is related to any medical issues. At this point, a medical care giver would rule out genetic and biochemical conditions.

Simple blood tests would be completed to rule out conditions such as hypothyroidism, Prader-Willi Syndrome, along with any other hormonal issues. If your child doesn’t have any conditions that would prevent him or her from participating in a child obesity treatment program, it is more than likely your medical care giver will approve, and even suggest continuing with, this type of program.

The best type of child obesity treatment program will help you and your child establish livable guidelines, understanding that weight loss is a hard thing to do, as habits are reformed. The established guidelines will embrace both nutrition and fitness. There will also be suggestions given on how to attain and maintain a healthy self image. Other important tips include having family meals and exercising as a family. One of the best methods for helping your child to lose weight is to maintain a positive attitude. Encouragement is essential to any type of success.
